SAHARA
"14 x 16"
I'm fascinated by Archaeology and watch the History channel or NAT-GEO for any stories pertaining to cultures. I was inspired by a story about Egypt and saw this image in my mind. It's about finding a part of your past under the sands of your present in order to uncover what it will take to find your purpose in the future. This collage - like piece took me half an hour. I particularly like the way the sunset like colors are blended in the background. The fabrics are mounted on painted card board then mounted to the canvas. It's a 90's piece and creating it took patience and flat heavy objects to ensure the success of the mount. I used a combination of wood and elmers glue, the damn thing is still holding!

PRIDE- HERITAGE II
"14 x 16"
I absolutely love this piece! I can't bring myself to sell it. Oh, I would for the right price but, it's sentimental. This was part of the series I did in the 90's, again with the mounting fabric to cardboard to canvas process. "Pride I" isn't as elaborate in texture and color so I keep that under wraps. The colors where inspired by the fact that Purple is a color used in royal garments and that just maybe I have a Queen in my ancestry. We all may have one but despite that, I love purple and the funny thing is I was listening to a Prince complilation CD at the time. This piece took three days and nine tubes of color to get the shades right. The gradient pattern is on purpose for this series. Again I was exploring and experimenting with color in order to find the right ones I was comfortable with as well as what I felt emotionally. I'm a touchy, feely type artist who uses texture and color to "feel" an idea. I guess you could call it 'Tactile" art but I don't recommend you touch any of the pieces. Try to feel with your eyes ;)

GOODBYE MOTHERLAND
"11 x 14"
This is a small but powerful piece because the premise behind the work is Slavery and Loss. The blue represents the middle passage across the treacherous Atlantic Ocean rushing by as you can see from the sweeping strokes. The three "mirrors" reflect the past, present and future. The upper right hand piece represents the pride, strenght and rich history of African people. The warriors we were, the artisty the whole culture that contains a depth of life no one could truly measure. The middle left hand piece represent the fracture of a culture, the chaotic times that happened and how African people suffered great losses of not only their culture but their spirits. Finally the lower right hand piece of the lone figure. Lost, afraid, alone is very much how some African-Americans and our modern African counterparts feel today. Where do we go from here? Is what the figure wonders, still in thier traditional clothing yet out of place in a foreign land.

ABUNDANT LIFE
"18 x 24"
It's a drab piece I know but Earth tones are my favorite pallet. This piece is from the 2005 group of works, as you can see there isn't a piece of cardboard used as support, the fabric is directly on the canvas which is painted with choppy brush strokes. The fabric contained deep browns and gold foil like designs that inspired the painting.
The symbol on the fabric is an "Ankh" which represents life in Egyptian culture. The way the abstract is configured, it actually is "Adam" being created from the dirt. It's hard to imagine life from dirt, but it happens in nature everyday. It happens when we create anything, we give life to an idea, a child, a person or animal in distress, we give, LIFE. It's unfortunate that we also have the power to take it away. An idea, an animal, a plant, adult and even, a child. There is a bit of God in all of us but for some, we use that power and in our arrogance and cruelty; destroy, his creation in very creative ways. Choose Life.
